Turn your main electricity into a computer network using power-line

Creating network connection room to room via main electricity with the right equipment it is possible, to establish a network connection using the main wiring in your home, because this wiring is present in all homes and is connected to all rooms, it’s an excellent way to get your home network going without having to string network cables all over the place, or go through what can be a tricky setup procedure for wireless system, power line networks as they are know, are more secure than wireless networks if set up correctly.

Several kinds of power-line network are available but they all follow the same basic principles, you need at least two device to make network, in a simple network, one of the power-line device could be connected to be your router or ADSL modem and the other your computer in another room, both are plugged into the mains socket in each room, the device fall into two categories, those that work with the homeplug standard, such as D-Link and those that work with the UPA/DS2 standard such Netgear’s HDX101, homeplug devices are more common but only homeplug certified devices will be work together, device compatibility is still tricky, so it’s best to go with devices from same one manufacturer.

Once you have a picked a manufacturer it is a case of buying the appropriate units and plugging them in, the basic homeplug unit consist of a single box with a network socket and a mains electrical plug, however some manufacturers have other compatible products, which include both main plug and main socket, that means user don’t have to give a mains socket in order to use power line networking, you simply plug another device into back of the socket and it doesn’t have to be a computer device either, all manufacturers caution against using power-line devices with extension cord, splitter or surge protector, these can filter out then network signal, making devices useless.

Once you have two or more compatible power-line products on the same home main system, they will find each other and communicate, most devices have three indicator lights, one indicates that power is being supplied to the devices, the second shows whether the devices has connected to the power-line network, if only have two devices on the network it indicates that the two devices have found each other and thirds shows that network traffic is being transferred between the computer and router, you can use two power-line printer and it this case the third light will show that data is being transferred between the two network devices in question.

Security is one of the main advantages of power-line networking, at a basic level, the network only operates on your home’s ring main, as soon as the power cables leave your home, the data stop being transmitted over them, it cannot get past what’s called the consumer unit, usually the unit that house your fuses or circuit breakers, anyone outside the house can’t access your network, if you want more security, though or you live in a flat, you can set up extra security.
