Classic Shaving Supplies That Belong In Every Shaving Kit

A shaving kit is meant to be as variable and as unique as the person doing the shaving. There are untold products that can be included in any shaving kit, and it is up to the shaver to decide what works best for them and offers them the best shave. Despite the variety of potential shaving materials, there are certain things that are more common in shaving kits than others. The classic shaving supplies of any kit include a pre-shave oil, a shaving cream, a shaving brush, and an aftershave balm.

A pre-shave oil is designed to be massaged into the shaver’s beard or stubble before the shave actually begins. This oil should stay on the skin while the shaving cream is applied over the top of it and then shaved off. The oil is designed to fulfill two purposes. The first of these purposes is to function as an extra lubrication on the skin, protecting it from potential damage by the razor and smoothing the razor’s path. The second purpose is softening the stubble on the shaver’s face so that it will be easier for the razor to cut through the hair.

A shaving cream is meant to be emulsified into thick lather, usually with the help of a shave brush. The lather is meant to rubbed across the skin that is to be shaved. The shaving cream is essential to achieving a shave that doesn’t irritate the skin. The cream forms a barrier between the razor and the skin, protecting against any harsh effects from the razor. But the cream also eases the razor’s path making it easier to shave and get a closer shave as well. In addition to these benefits, shaving cream can also add moisturizing agents that will help the skin reach its optimal state.

A shaving brush is meant to emulsify the shaving cream so that it can be applied to the skin in a thick foam. The brush absorbs water that is then beaten into the cream by the brush. This movement also mixes in air and transforms the cream into a lather that will facilitate the shaving process. The brush is also used to apply the lather to the face, and the rubbing of the brush bristles across the skin help raise the stubble and make it easier to shave. The motion of the brush also functions as an exfoliation of the skin, clearing away dead skin cells and making the skin appear healthy.

An aftershave balm is designed to repair any damage that the shaving process might have done to the skin. The balm is crafted to soothe the skin of any potential irritation and restore any moisture that might have been stripped because of the sharp blade of the razor rubbing along the skin’s surface. The balm should also put the skin in a better state. No matter what extras a shaver decides to incorporate into their shaving kit, these four things are the classic shaving supplies that every kit should have.
