What Do You Want in Windows

A recent article on ZDNet listed some of the features and additions that have been thrown on the table to be included in a future release of the Windows operating system.

These aren’t necessarily confirmed, just things that have been asked for by their beta testing user base.

  • antivirus included (I personally would love it if OneCare was integrated, but I’m sure they’d get in trouble for that, so I can’t see how it would happen. I believe the integration that’s currently available with the software and the OS is good)
  • full vector GUI (I’m guessing this is an extension of the Aero glass features)
  • expanded remote desktop features to include having multiple sessions (this would be a very nice feature for some users and I can see how that would really come in handy)
  • Media Center functionality expanded to any Windows PC
  • included download manager for IE7 (I don’t understand the necessity of this feature)
  • plain language error help (Yeah baby!, that would be very helpful, although now with Google, searching for a phrase out of the error message is pretty easy. There’s a good plug-in for someone, make a button available to immediately search for an answer in an error)

The author of the article, Mary Jo Foley, agreed with me on the likelihood of antivirus being included in a future release because of previous legal battles.

What things do you wish Windows would do out of the box? Or what should it do better? I think they could improve system management features for home networks. Software updates and locking down features and controls for users. I’m guessing items like that will be more likely with the release of the personal home server hardware.
