Thank You, Bill Gates

Bill gates last day at Microsoft is just days away, so it’s a good time to take stock of what the man has and hasn’t done for us and in some cases to us, by and large, I think we owe bill gates a world of thanks. Say what will about the intense, driven man, described by some as mean spirited, but without bill gates, there likely would have been no Microsoft, no windows and no office suite, and there might even have been a delay in the technology and internet revolutions. Bill gate legacy is that he leaves behind a world of technology and reputation that will likely grown in structure over time. E-mails that will get you fired

Here’s a scenario most of us are familiar with, whether first-hand or as a witness to a colleague’s faux pas: an e-mail with a stripping Santa Claus figure is sent to a cluster of internal contacts at Christmas time and, accidentally included on the recipients’ list, is the company CEO. Embarrassing for the sender, yes. Grounds for dismissal? Unlikely. What can prove far more detrimental to your career, however, is the way you compose your everyday e-mails. We often treat e-mail communication in the same casual manner as we do informal telephone conversations, and it’s all too easy to forget that there’s a flawless digital record of what’s been communicated. Unlike verbal conversations, e-mails can also be forwarded to the wrong people – usually by accident. Likewise, if a message is written in a hurry, it can end up sloppy or leave itself open to misinterpretation and, as a result, …

More than 75 percent of banking sites are not secure, according to a study out of the University of Michigan. A new study from the University of Michigan has found that more than 75 percent of banking websites are not completely up to snuff when it comes to security. The study looked at 214 financial institution websites and focused on both design flaws and improper security practices. None of these flaws represent catastrophic security issues, but many could allow for easier access to your password and user name should a malicious hacker come calling. The flaws studied included the following: Insecure Login System Nearly half of the banks examined had “secure” login systems on insecure web pages which did not use the SSL protocol. Failure to use SSL, the study says, allows for the possibility of an attack that would allow for the interception of login details if a user …

Set Yourself Up for a Raise

Many employees feel they’re underpaid for the work they do, yet they wait until their yearly performance review to negotiate a higher salary. But if you wait until then, you’ll be too late. You need to prepare year-round for that discussion. The following steps can help make sure you’re in position for a raise when review time comes around. Define Your Current Job The first step in setting yourself up for a raise is to establish a baseline or benchmark by finding and updating your job description. Unfortunately, many employers have outdated or inaccurate job descriptions. Often, there is no description on file at all. If that’s the case, use the Salary Wizard to search for one or two job descriptions that closely match your job and use that as a starting point. In either scenario, update the description to reflect your specific responsibilities and tasks. Review your updated job …
