July 1: No more Office 2003 for OEMs

It’s only been six months since Microsoft launched Office 2007 at retail. But as of July 1, 2007,  Microsoft won’t be making the OEM version of Office 2003 to its PC partners, a k a “OEMs.” Eric Ligman, Senior Manager of Small Business Community Engagement with Microsoft, reminded OEMs and customers of the pending cut-off date in a blog posting dated June 18: “After June 30, 2007 , OEM Microsoft Office 2003 will no longer be available from Microsoft. Some authorized OEM Microsoft distributors may have some remaining inventory left for a short time after June 30th; however, Microsoft will no longer be shipping OEM Microsoft Office to them.” Ligman reminded resellers that customers still withing to run Office 2003 can take advantage of the downgrade rights available to volume licensees of Office 2007. Yahoo! Toolbar

When you install Yahoo! Messenger, you also have the option of installing Yahoo! Toolbar along with it. I know, I know – you may groan when you see additional software offered during an installation. But there’s a reason – there are some very handy Messenger features integrated right into Toolbar, giving you access to your online friends no matter where you are on the internet. Once you’ve installed Yahoo! Toolbar, it automatically appears near the top of your web browser. Depending on whether you’re signed in to the Yahoo! network, you may or may not see the Yahoo! Messenger button. To add it, click on the toolbar’s “Settings” button and select “Add/Edit Buttons”. Locate the Messenger smiley in the button name list and click “Add this Button”. (Note that the Messenger button is only available for Yahoo! Toolbar for Internet Explorer.)

Tabs in Yahoo! Messenger

As you may have seen in the preview of Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista, tabbed IM windows are coming soon. This feature lets you group multiple conversations into one IM window and use tabs to navigate among them. As it turns out, there are several hidden features that are built into Yahoo! Messenger, which can be turned on with changes to the Windows registry settings. One of our Messenger engineers, Hung Nguyen, developed some code that when installed, adds tabs to Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 (on Windows XP).

Microsoft Renames Its IPTV Platform

Microsoft Corp. unveiled on Sunday a new brand name for its Internet-based television platform, a service deployed by 10 companies including AT&T Inc. Microsoft Mediaroom, formerly known as Microsoft Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), will link with computers found in the home to allow users to access a PC hard drive to listen to music or view photos on a TV screen, the company said. The television push by the world’s largest software maker aims to deliver TV over high-speed Internet networks and hopes the software will eventually open up the TV to a world of services already on the Web. Microsoft said Mediaroom will also enable some applications that access the Internet without a Web browser, so users can view streaming online video or look at photos uploaded onto the Internet. The company said it will introduce a toolkit to allow developers to create applications for the Mediaroom platform.

Microsoft Debuts New MSN For Mobile Phones

Microsoft Corp. launched a redesigned MSN portal optimized for mobile phones on Sunday, stepping up its offering at a time when more powerful devices increase the demand for richer content on handsets. U.S. mobile Internet use still represents only a fraction of computer-based Web usage, but technology heavyweights like Microsoft see increasingly powerful mobile phones and faster networks opening the door for new services and content. “We firmly believe there is an inflection point here,” said Phil Holden, Microsoft’s director of mobile Web services. “There’s a new battle, a new frontline developing on the mobile phone.”

FBI Pulls Plug on Several Botnet Hackers

More than 1 million computers are used by hackers as remote-controlled robots to crash online systems, accept spam and steal users’ personal information, the FBI said Wednesday. The government has no way to track down all the computers, both in the U.S. and elsewhere, that hackers have massed into centrally controlled collections known as botnets. But the FBI has pulled the plug on several botnet hackers, or zombies. One man was charged this week in a scheme that froze computer systems at Chicago-area hospitals in 2006 and delayed medical services.

Search Google and Yahoo at The Same Time

YellowPages Corporation, owned by AT&T has introduced a tool, SearchBoth.com.au, that allows users to use Google and Yahoo! search engines at the same time. SearchBoth.com.au is a cooperative partnership between Google, Yahoo and AT&T. When users type in their related search words, SearchBoth.com.au will give them the results from Google and Yahoo in a split screened frame, side by side allowing them to look at both search engine results at the same time to figure out the best and most relevant search find. SearchBoth has also launched in Canada, US, and UK with SearchBoth.ca, SearchBoth.com, and SearchBoth.co.uk, respectively. The company is currently working on adding other search engines like Ask and MSN along with others as an option. The user can select any two search engines and view them side by side.
