Windows Vista Parental Controls

If you’re a parent, you know there’s more to guiding your children’s computer use than shielding them from inappropriate content or contact with strangers. It’s also important to ensure that they aren’t on the computer for too long a time or when they’re supposed to be doing something else. With Windows Vista, after you and your family have agreed on a set of rules governing computer use, Parental Controls can help enforce those limits. Windows Vista Parental Controls are included in the non-business versions of Windows Vista, which are Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Home Premium, and Windows Vista Home Basic. Before you can start customizing Parental Controls for your children, you need to create user accounts for each of them. After you create a user account for each child, you can adjust the Parental Control settings: Open the Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts and Family Safety. Select …

Cracking Wifi with Back Track

Ever wondered just how secure your WEP protected important; wireless network is? Well today I’ll show you how to test it. There have been a lot of articles written about this subject already and by now it is common knowledge that WEP is only the barest of security precautions. I’m going to show you how you can test your own wireless network’s security using the linux livecd distro back|track. Before we go any further, I feel it necessary to mention two things. The first being the ethics of hacking. Most of you are probably familiar with this subject already but, just to refresh your memory. Second, it goes without saying that this is for YOUR OWN NETWORK TESTING PURPOSES ONLY. Unauthorized access of other people’s networks is illegal. If you have problems or questions about anything in this guide, for the love of god use google/wikipedia and look it up …

What Do You Want in Windows

A recent article on ZDNet listed some of the features and additions that have been thrown on the table to be included in a future release of the Windows operating system. These aren’t necessarily confirmed, just things that have been asked for by their beta testing user base. antivirus included (I personally would love it if OneCare was integrated, but I’m sure they’d get in trouble for that, so I can’t see how it would happen. I believe the integration that’s currently available with the software and the OS is good) full vector GUI (I’m guessing this is an extension of the Aero glass features) expanded remote desktop features to include having multiple sessions (this would be a very nice feature for some users and I can see how that would really come in handy) Media Center functionality expanded to any Windows PC included download manager for IE7 (I don’t understand …

Windows Home Server (WHS)

If you’re like me you’ve been interested in the possibility of the Windows Home Server sitting in your house and you know, servin’ stuff, since it was first mentioned on this site awhile back. Debra Shinder at WXPNews has some great information about the features and possibilities in her recent WXPNewsletter. The Windows Home Server also automatically backs up not just everything on the server, but files on all the other PCs on the home network, too. There’s a full PC image of each computer so that if any computer has to be restored, it’s easy to do. And WHS monitors security related settings on all the PCs so that you can know whether all the computers have their anti-virus software turned on, for example. One great use for a home server is to share media files such as music and recorded TV programs. And it’s not just other computers that …

New Remote Desktop Connection Version Available

Deb Shinder at WXPNews is loading me up with good information tonight. I’ve been having problems with getting the Remote Desktop Connection working through my current desktop system at home. She’s pointed me to a newer version that’s included with Vista, but can be downloaded separately and used with Windows XP. What’s that sound? Oh, it’s the sound of me downloading this bad boy as we speak. I’ll get it installed tonight and give it a try tomorrow and see what we’re talking about with these new features.

Quick Fixes for Nasty Vista Problems

Can’t Read Reader You can’t consider a Windows operating system installation complete until you’ve got Adobe Reader on your system. So many assets on the Web come in Acrobat form, and unless you have the full program on your software shelf you need Reader to check them out.If you’re the kind of power-user who turns off User Account Control, or if you log on right into the default administrator account, you might notice that Adobe Reader 8 won’t install after download—or after you discover it on some other media that included it. That’s a known problem, and you’re not alone. You’ll have to solve this problem through one of two ways. If you’ve turned off UAC, turn it back on. Go into Control Panel, click User Accounts, and click Turn User Account Control on or off. Restart the computer. Then, install Adobe Reader normally. When the installation is complete, you …

Bullet Proof Way to Crash Windows Vista

It took millions of dollars to make Windows Vista secure and stable. While I am happy that Windows Vista is so much stable than Windows XP; there is a bullet proof way to crash WindowsVista. Open Windows Vista windows explorer by hitting Windows Key and the letter E. Try holding both keys down for 3 seconds and it is annoying. Try holding the key down to 5 seconds and its f**k up. How about holding down the key for 30 seconds? Windows Vista would crash similar to what happened to my computer a while ago. A simple service which loops a thousand times while sending Windows Key + E can be written within ten minutes. Microsoft may have spent millions of dollars for security and stability; it takes two fingers or a simple service to crash Windows Vista down. No matter how bullet proof Windows Vista claims to be, two …
